Recently, a delegation of Chinese railway engineers visited Brazil to investigate the feasibility of a new cross-border railway project connecting ports in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The delegation inspected a section of the 1,527-kilometre Integrated East-West Railway (FIOL) under construction.

The mission was launched by the Brazilian government to assess the feasibility of a new rail line connecting the southern Brazilian port of Porto Sul with the Peruvian Pacific port of Chancay. Dubbed the Brazil-Peru Bi-oceanic Corridor (BPBC), the project is expected to promote international trade between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, as well as deepen economic and trade cooperation between China and South America.

China is expected to take the lead in conducting a feasibility study for the dual-ocean corridor project. According to the itinerary, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will visit Beijing on May 12-13 to further promote relevant cooperation.

"Currently, Brazil exports about US$350 billion a year, more than a third of which go to China," said Leonardo Cezar Ribeiro, Brazil's secretary of national rail transport, "and 60 percent of these exports are iron ore and soybeans, which are the most suitable for rail transport and are not only cost-effective but also more environmentally friendly." ”

The idea for the construction of the BPBC is to form a cross-border transport corridor with a total length of more than 3,000 kilometers by connecting Brazil's existing Fiol Railway with the Central and Western Integration Railway (Fico), and to create a new transit railway between Brazil and Peru to open up a transport corridor to the Pacific Ocean.

"The project, which will make full use of part of the infrastructure already built by the Brazilian government, aims to transport the grain and mineral resources of the states of Mato Grosso, Goiás and Bahia to ports on the Atlantic coast," Ribeiro said. ”
