The last old electric train on Busan Metro Line 1 will be retired

Rail Transit Expo News: South Korea's Busan Transportation Corporation recently announced that the last old electric train on Busan Subway Line 1 will end commercial operations on August 26. With the retirement of this train, the nearly 10-year project to refurbish the old trains of Line 1 will officially conclude, and Busan Metro Line 1 will fully transition into the new electric train operation phase.

The final operational task this time was for Line 1, the 45th set. This train began operation on June 25, 1997, and has now been in service for 29 years, with a cumulative mileage of about 3 million kilometers. It is the last retired train in the process of upgrading old trains on Busan Metro Line 1.

According to the schedule, the 45th set will depart from Odoura Beach Station at 9:18 a.m. on August 26 and arrive at Laopu Station at 10:36 a.m., completing its final passenger service. On the day, Lee Byung-jin, president of Busan Transportation Corporation, will enter the driver's cabin with the train and, before the train arrives at Nopo Station, will announce it via the onboard announcement to thank citizens who have traveled the train for the past 29 years, while also introducing the comprehensive renewal of the Busan Metro and its transition to a new train operation system.

The Busan Transportation Corporation will also hold commemorative events for citizens. Citizens who register in advance can photograph the final operation of the 45th set at Busan National University Station, then take the train to the Laopu Train Depot and visit the "Line 1 1 Formation Cultural Heritage Electric Train History Exhibition Hall."

With the end of train set 45, the renovation project for the aging electric trains on Busan Metro Line 1, which has lasted about 10 years, will be fully completed. With this, Busan Metro Line 1 will fully implement new electric train operations, laying the foundation for future line services, safety assurance, and improved passenger experience.

After completing the train renewal for Line 1, Busan Transportation Corporation will continue to advance the upgrade project for the old electric trains on Line 2. The first phase plans to update 168 cars and 28 train sets. The new trains are expected to begin deliveries gradually within 2026, followed by performance testing and trial runs, with plans to begin rolling out passenger operations in phases starting in 2027.
