Taiwan's Tainan City Government expects the first phase of the MRT Blue Line to start construction by the end of next year, which is the first part of Tainan's planned subway network, with a total of five lines.
The first phase of the elevated blue line has a total length of 8.39 kilometers and 10 stations, running along Zhonghua Road in Yongkang District, Zhonghua East Road and Dongmen Road in the East District, and Zhongshan Road in Rende District, serving the high-density development zone.
Wang Mingde, director of the Tainan Transportation Bureau, said that in order to speed up the construction progress, the basic design work has been carried out in parallel with the comprehensive planning review. The final design is expected to be approved by the end of this year. It will then be submitted to the Public Works Commission so that tenders and construction can begin next year.
The feasibility study for the extension of the Blue Line is being reviewed by the relevant authorities and a comprehensive plan has been submitted to the Ministry of Transport (MOTC) to align with the overall project schedule.
The other four proposed MRT lines in Tainan City are currently at different stages of development, the red line feasibility study has been submitted to the Ministry of Communications, the dark green line feasibility study will also be submitted in the near future, the revision of the green line feasibility study is nearing completion, and the yellow line feasibility study contract is being tendered.
Tainan is the only one of Taiwan's six major cities that currently does not have a subway system, and the final approval of the Blue Line will mark a major milestone in the city's development.
