Recently, the mayor of Bogotá, Carlos F. Galán, announced on social platforms that the first train of the first phase of the Bogotá Metro project is expected to arrive in September this year, with a relevant video. As you can see from the video, the train's exterior features a red and yellow color scheme, in keeping with the existing TransMilenio Bus Rapid Transit system.
According to the Bogotá Metro Company (EMB), the metro trains are manufactured by CRRC Chang Passenger and consist of six carriages, each with a capacity of 300 passengers, with a total capacity of 1,800 people, 14% of which are seats.
The 30 trains are all 100% electric, and are equipped with barrier-free facilities, including two wheelchair spaces per car. In addition, 36 of the 252 seats are priority seats for the elderly, pregnant women and people with reduced mobility.
It is important to note that the train is fully autonomous, without the need for a driver, and can only be manually controlled in case of emergency, and will be monitored from a central control center (CCO) at all times.
Before official delivery, the metro trains will undergo rigorous testing in China. During the test, the train will run 2,500 kilometers on a test track and simulate a full load by loading sandbags or water tanks to verify its carrying capacity and operational stability.
In addition, the construction of the Bogotá metro project is also progressing steadily. At present, 900 meters of track have been laid, and the first phase of the metro line is 27 kilometers long, with 16 stations, and an estimated one-way travel time of 27 minutes, from the Patio Taller depot to the Calle 72 station.
According to the latest data from the Bogotá Metro, in 2024, the overall construction progress of the project reached 48.24%, with 13 of the 16 stations in the first phase of the project already under construction.
According to the plan, the first train will arrive in Bogotá in September, and dynamic testing will begin immediately. Subsequently, two new trains will be delivered every month until they are fully operational in 2028.
In the future, preliminary tests will be carried out in 2026 on a 5.7-kilometer test section, and in 2027, systematic tests will be carried out on a 24-kilometer-long track, fully preparing for official operation in 2028.
