How long does it take to get from Shanghai to Hangzhou? The Hyperloop is getting closer

Shanghai ⇋ Hangzhou, only 15 minutes!

The news of the construction of a "super high-speed railway" between Hangzhou and Shanghai began to circulate many years ago, and the citizens of both places are looking forward to it.

This "hyper-high-speed railway" has recently had a new trend - in the newly released public draft of the "Hangzhou Municipal Land and Space Master Plan (2021-2035)", it is clearly mentioned that it will "pre-control the construction space of ultra-high-speed railway in the direction of Shanghai". This may mean that the "hyperloop" is one step closer to landing!

I have accelerated it many times, but I still hope to shorten it

In the public draft of the Hangzhou Municipal Land and Space Master Plan, it is clear that Hangzhou will build a multi-directional radiation high-speed railway corridor to form a high-speed rail network that radiates the whole province, connects the Yangtze River Delta and reaches the whole country, which mentions that the ultra-high-speed railway construction space in Shanghai will be pre-controlled.

In fact, as early as the beginning of this century, Hangzhou and Shanghai began to plan a rail transit system running at ultra-high speeds, so as to further shorten the train running time between the two cities and facilitate the rapid travel of citizens and tourists.

In 2006, the Shanghai-Hangzhou Maglev Transportation Project carried out engineering feasibility study work, and during the construction of Hangzhou East Railway Station and Shanghai Hongqiao Station, platforms were also reserved for Shanghai-Hangzhou Maglev.

In recent years, after several railway speed-ups and the opening of the Shanghai-Hangzhou high-speed railway, the train running time between Hangzhou and Shanghai has been continuously shortened, and it only takes more than 40 minutes to take the high-speed rail. However, many citizens and tourists still hope that the "time distance" between the two cities can be further shortened, so as to promote more frequent and close contact between the two cities.

In December 2019, the "Outline of the Yangtze River Delta Regional Integration Development Plan" was released, proposing that the Yangtze River Delta actively and prudently carry out planning and research on maglev projects such as Shanghai and Hangzhou. This is a clarification of the relevant content of Shanghai-Hangzhou maglev in the national plan.

In 2021, the 600 km/h high-speed maglev transportation system developed by CRRC with completely independent intellectual property rights rolled off the assembly line, which is the world's first high-speed maglev transportation system with a design speed of 600 kilometers per hour. If this system is adopted in the future Shanghai-Hangzhou Super Maglev Project, it will only take 20 minutes from Hangzhou to Shanghai, which is about 25 minutes faster than the shortest high-speed train from Hangzhou to Shanghai.

At present, the fastest speed of high-speed rail in commercial operation in China is 350 kilometers per hour, and the cruising speed of aircraft is 800-900 kilometers per hour. The 600 km/h high-speed maglev transportation system can just fill the speed gap between high-speed rail and air transportation.

In 2023, the "high-speed flying car" being developed in China will complete the first full-scale supernavigation test, and the future speed will reach 1,000 kilometers per hour. According to the project evaluation team, it is more feasible and beneficial to build such a "hyperloop" between Hangzhou and Shanghai – if this idea is realized, the travel time between Hangzhou and Shanghai can be reduced to 15 minutes.

However, whether it is a high-speed maglev with a speed of 600 kilometers per hour or a "high-speed flying car" with a speed of 1,000 kilometers per hour, there is no precedent for completion and operation. The technology development required for the Hyperloop system is still in its early stages, and there are many daunting technical challenges to overcome before it can be built on a large scale.

Therefore, it will take time for the Shanghai-Hangzhou "super high-speed railway" to really land. At the level of land and space master planning, it is the pre-controlled construction space for the ultra-high-speed railway, which reflects Hangzhou's expectations and aspirations for the "super high-speed railway", which is conducive to the follow-up work such as project planning, promotion and construction.

A number of intercity high-speed railways have been planned

In the public draft of Hangzhou's land and space master plan, it is also mentioned that Hangzhou, Shanghai, Suzhou and Ningbo will add a number of new railways in the future.

In the northeast, there will be new railways from Shanghai to Hangzhou via Zhapu, as well as intercity railways from Shanghai to Hangzhou and Suzhou to Hangzhou.

The Shanghai-Hangzhou railway, also known as the Shanghai-Zha-Hangzhou high-speed railway, is scheduled to start construction this year. This is the second high-speed railway directly connected to Hangzhou and Shanghai, starting from Hangzhou West Railway Station, setting up Linping North Station in the north of Linping City, passing through Tongxiang Station and Jiaxing South Station in Jiaxing City, setting up Pinghu South Station in Pinghu, and then extending eastward into Shanghai, setting up Shanghai Jinshan Station and Fengxian Station, passing through Situan Station, and then using the second phase of Shanghai-Tong Railway to Shanghai East Railway Station.

The Shanghai-Hangzhou intercity railway is planned from Shanghai to Hangzhou via Jiaxing.

The Suzhou-Hangzhou intercity railway starts from Wujiang District in the south of Suzhou City, passes through Nanxun in the east of Huzhou City and Xinshi in Deqing County, and then extends south into Hangzhou to access the planned Linping North Station. Some progress has been made on some sections.

In the northwest direction, the second channel of the Nanjing-Hangzhou railway and the Hangzhou-Jixi railway via Lin'an will be added.

The second railway channel from Nanjing to Hangzhou will be the second railway connecting Hangzhou and Nanjing in the future. With a design speed of 350 kilometers per hour, it starts from Hangzhou West Railway Station, passes through Anji, enters Anhui, passes through Guangde City, Langxi County, and then enters Jiangsu, passes through Gaochun District and Lishui District in Nanjing, and finally arrives in the central city of Nanjing.

The Hangzhou to Jixi Railway via Lin'an is a high-speed railway from Hangzhou West Railway Station to Jixi in Anhui Province via Lin'an, and is part of the Hangzhou-Wuhan high-speed rail corridor.

To the southeast, a new Hangzhou-Ningbo intercity railway will be added, which is planned to connect Qiantang New Area, Shaoxing Binhai New Area and Ningbo Qianwan New Area in the east of Hangzhou.

In addition, Hangzhou will also plan to build new liaison lines such as the Wangjiangmen Railway cross-river channel, and give priority to the use of the surplus capacity of the existing railway to develop urban (suburban) railways.
