On September 14, the São Paulo state government announced that in order to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the opening of the city's first metro line and Brazil, a record 42.2 billion reais (about 8.12 billion US dollars) of public and private funds will be invested in the construction of new lines, line extensions and fleet renewal.

The network operated by the São Paulo Metro Company will add 43 kilometers of lines and 19 stations, with an investment of R$23 billion. The PPP concessionaire of the Line 6 (Orange Line) project will invest R$18 billion in private finance, with the first 15.3 kilometers from Brasilândia to Perdizes scheduled to open in 2026.

In addition, R$45 billion will be used for the construction of lines 19 (sky blue) and 20 (pink line), with other new lines including line 16 (purple line) and line 22 (brown line).

At present, the construction of the São Paulo metro has reached an all-time high, and three tunnel boring machines (TBMs) are working underground in the city.

R$6.8 billion will be used for the extension of Line 4 (Yellow Line) and Line 5 (Lilac Line). Work on the 3.3-kilometer extension of Line 4 to Chácara do Jóquei and Taboão da Serra will begin at the end of this year and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2028.

Line 5 will extend 4.3 km to Comendador Sant'anna and Jardim Ângela, with work expected to begin in early 2025 and be completed in 2029.

The first section of Line 17 (Gold Line) is expected to open later this year, connecting Congonhas Airport to the MRT network. In 2027, a second section from Perdizes to São Joaquim will be opened, connecting the northern region of São Paulo with the city centre.

The first section of Line 2 (Green Line) from Vila Prudente to Vila Formosa will also open in 2027, and the three new stations of Line 15 (Silver Line) Ipiranga, Boa Esperança and Jacu Pêssego will also be put into operation at the same time. The next section of Line 2 from Vila Formosa to Penha will open in 2028.

In 2023, the São Paulo State Government invested a record R$2.67 billion in metro projects, including lines 2, 15 and 17, an increase of 27% compared to the previous year. With a budget of R$4.7 billion for these works this year, passengers are gradually returning to the metro and commuter network. Footfall is currently about 20% below pre-pandemic levels.

Since the opening of the first 7-kilometer Line 1 (Blue Line) between Jabaquara and Vila Mariana on September 14, 1974, the São Paulo metro network has grown to 104.4 km, making it the largest metro system in Latin America.
