200 million euros! CAF will supply Urbos trams to New Taipei City, Taiwan

In June 2025, Spanish rail transit manufacturer CAF signed a contract with Malaysia's Gamuda Berhad to provide up to 23 Urbos series trams for a new light rail line in New Taipei City, Taiwan.

The contract covers the supply of complete vehicles, spare parts, depot equipment and driver training simulation systems. If all procurement options are implemented, the total contract value could be as high as 200 million euros.

New Taipei Light Rail System Expansion CAF Penetrates into the Asian Market

New Taipei City, a city adjacent to Taipei with a population of about 4 million, has been actively promoting the construction of urban rail transit system in recent years. Gamuda Berhad has been commissioned to build the first phase of the Xidong Line, which includes a 6-kilometre elevated line, with 6 stations and a depot, is scheduled to be completed within 7 years.

In addition, the second Keelung Line, which is 19.1 km long, was approved in 2022 and has a total length of 19.1 km13 stations.

Urbos tram that adapts to Taiwan's climate and barrier-free needs

CAF will supply the New Taipei project with a nine-car, 55-meter-long Urbos tram with an aluminum body structure and a maximum capacity of 615 passengers。 The vehicle is designed with barrier-free access in mind, making it easy for passengers with reduced mobility to travel.

At the same time, the vehicle has been specially designed to adapt to Taiwan's humid and subtropical climate to ensure long-term stable operation in the local urban rail system.
