On June 10, WESTbahn Management GmbH, a well-known Austrian railway operator, officially submitted documents to the Austrian railway regulator Schienen-Control to declare the opening of a new international railway passenger service. The line connects Vienna, the capital of Austria, with Budapest, the capital of Hungary, via the important cities of Bruck, Parndorf Ort, Hegyeshalom, Mosonmagyaróvár, Győr and Tatabánya.
The new service is scheduled to be officially operational by the end of 2026
According to the plan submitted by WESTbahn, the new line is expected to be officially operational on December 13, 2026. Initially, five pairs of round-trip departures will be offered daily, at the following times:
Departure times from Vienna Central Station: approx. 6:05, 9:10, 12:10, 15:10, 18:10
Arrival times at Kelenföld Station in Budapest are approximately 8:35, 11:35, 14:35, 17:35, 20:35
Return direction:
Departure times from Kelenföld in Budapest are approximately 6:25, 9:25, 12:25, 15:25, 18:25
Arrival times at Vienna Central Station: approx. 8:50, 11:50, 14:50, 17:50, 20:50
All trains will operate daily, with the possibility of additional stops between Vienna and Hegyeshalom to enhance connectivity to towns along the route.
WESTbahn plans to use CRRC 4100 DDEMU EMUs manufactured by CRRC for this international passenger mission. The vehicle is a six-car train with approximately 560 seats and is divided into three classes to meet the needs of a diverse range of passengers.
Operational & Security Clearance
According to the application documents, WESTbahn, as the operating entity, has obtained the relevant operating licenses and safety certifications required by Article 16 of the EU Railway Directive 2012/34/EU and Directive 2004/49/EG. The application for this service is based on Article 4 of the EU 2018/1795 Implementing Regulation, which is subject to a legal obligation to make the documents transparent to the public once submitted.
Regional connectivity has been upgraded
The Vienna-Budapest line is an important part of the China-Europe transport corridor, and the existing rail passenger transport is mainly operated by the State Railways. As a private railway company, WESTbahn plans to enter the operation of this international trunk line, which will not only introduce a market competition mechanism, but also is expected to improve service quality and operational efficiency.
This declaration also responds to the trend of further opening up of the EU railway market, and has positive significance for the realization of more free, efficient and diversified cross-border rail travel.
