The contract for the Jujuy New Energy Light Rail Project was signed on May 5, 2022, the first train rolled off the assembly line on June 6, 2023, loaded and shipped on September 20, 2023, arrived in Argentina on November 14, 2023, and officially delivered to users on December 7, 2023.
Since then, CRRC Tangshan Company has set up an after-sales service team and cooperated with the owner to carry out a half-year commissioning, test and line trial operation.
Named "Tren Solar de la Quebrada", two new energy light rail trains are officially in operation for 35 kilometres from Volcán to Maimará station, following the tracks of the restored C branch of the old Belgrano railway, passing through the small towns of Tumbaya and Purmamarca in the Umavaca Valley, a World Heritage Site.
The light rail train uses the original local infrastructure and solar photovoltaic power generation resources, and is powered by lithium iron phosphate batteries; The 2-car train can accommodate 70 passengers and can operate at a maximum speed of 60 km/h.
The carriage is custom-designed with large wide-angle viewing windows and side-top viewing windows, with lines and colors featuring the Umahuaka Valley, which is convenient for visitors to enjoy the scenery of the World Heritage area outside the window.
It is reported that Jujuy Province plans to extend the operation of new energy light rail trains to Tilcara, a major local attraction, and eventually reach La Quiaca, on the border between Argentina and Bolivia.
