Network Rail, the UK's rail infrastructure regulator, has entered its five-year funding period – the Seventh Control Period (CP7) – and has put climate change at the forefront of its operations.

As part of its £45.5 billion ($57.4 billion) rail improvement programme, Network Rail has set a number of targets in the CP7 programme, including improving the weather resilience of the UK rail network, investing in early warning technology, and updating ageing infrastructure.

"Tackling climate change, safely improving train performance, adapting and responding to changing commuting habits, and managing aging infrastructure will require the entire industry to come together for the benefit of all rail users," said CEO Andrew Haines. ”

"While there are challenges and opportunities ahead, our mission remains the same – our goal is to get people and goods safely where they need to go. ”

Haines also described climate change as the "biggest challenge" facing Network Rail, acknowledging that a fully "rainproof" network is not possible, but said the UK could be better prepared for extreme weather.
TECHNOLOGIES INSTALLED TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM INCLUDE GUSTO, WHICH USES TERRAIN TO PREDICT WIND SPEEDS, ALLOWING TRAINS TO RUN AT HIGHER SPEEDS EVEN IN STORMY WEATHER.
In addition, Network Rail said it will build or reconstruct more than 600 kilometers of drainage ditches to enable the railway to cope with greater rainfall and reduce flooding, while also recruiting nearly 400 drainage engineers to improve the care and maintenance of the network's drainage system.

Hugh Merriman, UK Minister for Railways, said: "The rail network must be future-proof, resilient to handle extreme weather, while delivering the level of reliability and service our passengers deserve. I am confident that the plan developed by Network Rail today will help keep our railways running well for years to come. ”
