Malaysia invites technology companies to collaborate on battery-powered LRT

Sim Chi Chin, chairman of the Technology Depository Agency (TDA) under the Malaysian Ministry of Finance, said that the Mass Rapid Transit Corporation (MRT Corp) is interested in cooperating with local high-tech companies to explore the implementation of battery-powered electric light rail transit in the Penang LRT plan. .

He called on local high-tech companies to proactively come forward with any feasible suggestions.

 

He said that for the Penang LRT project, the technology trusteeship he leads will be the main organization driving Penang’s high-tech industry to participate in this plan.

“We plan to communicate with industry players who are interested in participating in the Penang LRT project from all aspects of technology, and will hold an exchange meeting this month in cooperation with investment institutions in Penang.

Hope technology companies will participate

"The current LRT is powered by electricity. As for whether it can be powered by batteries like electric vehicles? This is a vision that is possible." 

Sim Zhiqin said that after he and the technical trustee team visited the MRT Corporation in Sungai Buloh a few days ago and had a long discussion with MRT Corporation CEO Datuk Mohd Zarif on the Industrial Cooperation Plan (ICP), reached the above consensus.

Through the industrial cooperation plan, local technology companies will be allowed to participate in construction projects in the national railway field, including software, ticketing systems, sensors, robots and heavy engineering, etc. Shen Zhiqin hopes that Penang technology companies will have the opportunity to participate in large-scale government engineering projects.

In addition, he also hopes that Penang’s LRT project will elevate Malaysia’s LRT technology to a higher level.

He pointed out that the agency is committed to promoting industrial cooperation plans and has currently promoted several small and medium-sized enterprises, such as SMH Rail, to develop into multinational companies.
