ARTS Rail Exhibition learned that the Municipality of São Paulo has officially approved the Secretary General of the São Paulo Urban Transport and Transport Department, Celso Jorge Caldeira, to carry out a 12-day official visit to China from August 1 to 12, 2025.
(The first from the right is Celso Jorge Caldeira).
The visit will focus on smart mobility and transportation decarbonization technologies, and Secretary Caldera will visit a number of well-known Chinese companies in Nanjing, Shenzhen and Hong Kong, including CRRC and BYDHuawei and Chery & Wanda Bus. There will be a number of technical exchanges, business visits and high-level meetings to gain a deeper understanding of China's latest solutions in sustainable transportation and smart infrastructure.
Promote the "decarbonization" of public transportation and learn from advanced technology experience
According to the São Paulo Municipal Secretariat for Transportation and Urban Mobility (SMT), the mission to China aims to deepen cooperation between São Paulo and Chinese transportation technology companies, and expand solutions in the electrification, automation and energy storage of urban transportation systems. The focus will be on the following projects:
Huawei's BESS battery energy storage system (Battery Energy Storage System) can improve the charging efficiency of electric buses, enhance grid resilience, and alleviate infrastructure pressure.
BYD's entire electric vehicle industry chain layout and its many factories in Brazil;
CRRC Group's global layout in railway and urban rail transit vehicles and major projects in Brazil;
Chery Wanda Bus's capabilities in the research and development, manufacturing and export of new energy buses.
The Municipality of São Paulo emphasized that the mission is of high strategic importance and will help improve the modernization and green transformation of the city's transportation system.
CRRC Group, as a global leader in rail transit equipment manufacturing, has provided trains for the São Paulo metro system and is now participating in the construction of the "São Paulo-Campinas" intercity railway project, which is expected to have a total investment of up to R$14 billion and is expected to be put into operation by 2031.
As the world's leading new energy company, BYD operates a number of comprehensive industrial bases in China. It also has three factories in Brazil:
Campinas (SP) plant: started production in 2015, focusing on 100% electric bus manufacturing;
Manaus (AM) plant: completed in 2020 for lithium iron phosphate battery (LiFePO₄) production;
The new Kamasari (BA) plant, which will be officially put into operation on July 1, 2025, is BYD's first electric and hybrid vehicle assembly base outside of Asia, and has already started prototype assembly of models such as the Dolphin Mini and Song Pro DM-i.
As a global leader in ICT and smart devices, Huawei's Digital Energy division is vigorously promoting the large-scale deployment of BESS systems. The system, which integrates high-capacity batteries and ultra-fast charging technology, has been included in the "Letter of Intent" signed by the City of São Paulo with Huawei and Matrix Energia in June 2025, and will be deployed in bus parking lots in the future to help the city reduce its dependence on traditional power grids.
Chery Wanda Bus Company is a joint venture between China Chery Automobile Group and Wanda Group, is an enterprise focusing on the manufacturing of new energy commercial vehicles, covering urban buses, school buses, long-distance passenger vehicles and other models from 6 meters to 18 meters, with technical routes covering electric, hybrid, natural gas and traditional fuel power, and has mature export capabilities.
The visit of the São Paulo Municipality is another high-level exchange action following Mayor Ricardo Nunes' successful visit to China in April 2025. At that time, Mayor Nunez delivered a keynote speech at the Brazil-China Economic Value Summit, focusing on topics such as smart cities, electric buses and bioenergy, and facilitated a $100 million financing agreement with the China Development Bank for the procurement of electric buses.
This high-level visit to China will further continue the pace of strategic cooperation with China, providing more possibilities for São Paulo to realize the vision of "zero-emission transportation", improve electric bus infrastructure, and introduce intelligent energy management systems.
