Rail Transit Exhibition News On August 5, 2025, Julio Castiglioni, President of the São Paulo Metro Company, attended the contract signing celebration ceremony held in China. The total amount of the contract is 3.1 billion reais (about 610 million US dollars). On a large background board at the ceremony, CRRC showed the possible design image of the R series train for the first time.
Although the entire picture is not fully visible, the train design exhibits several features that align with the technical specifications of the São Paulo Metro, including:
Cab no-cab design
Each carriage is equipped with four doors
No overhead power supply equipment
External track door mechanism
The technical specifications may still be being adjusted
It is reported that the image may only be a preliminary schematic at present, and does not represent the final plan. The project team of the São Paulo Metro is currently in China and is working with CRRC to confirm and deepen the design of the new train project.
Castiglioni said: "During this visit, the delegation gained an in-depth understanding of CRRC's corporate structure. CRRC is one of the world's largest manufacturers of rail transit equipment, with 46 subsidiaries and 89 production lines, covering a wide range of products such as high-speed rail, intercity trains, urban subways, and conventional passenger trains.
During this trip to China, Castilioni also visited the BYD factory to learn about the monorail being produced for the Line 17-Golden Line, demonstrating the São Paulo Metro's focus on diversified rail transit solutions.
Help expand the extension of Line 2
These new R trains will be used to enhance the capacity of São Paulo Metro Lines 1 (Blue), 2 (Green) and 3 (Red), especially the extension of Line 2 under construction to Penha New paragraph. A total of 8 new stations will be added to the line, and 22 new trains are expected to be prioritized here to meet the growing demand for passenger flow.
The R train is the first new train to be ushered in on the traditional line of the São Paulo metro after the H train provided by CAF. This cooperation project not only represents an important breakthrough in China's rail transit technology in the South American market, but also injects strong impetus into the modernization of public transportation in the megacity of São Paulo.
