ARTS Rail Transit Exhibition learned that SMRT, the operator of Singapore's subway, held a press conference at Bishan Depot today to announce its operating results and future development plans for fiscal year 2025. At the press conference, SMRT focused on the progress of the "Depot 4.0" upgrade project, which is redefining the new standard of subway train maintenance with intelligence and digitalization as the core.
Bishan Depot has been in operation since 1987 and is the oldest MRT depot in Singapore. The "Car Factory 4.0" project was launched two years ago with a total investment of about S$7 million, fully funded by SMRT. By introducing advanced automation technology and integrated digital solutions, the project not only greatly improves maintenance efficiency, but also promotes the transformation of subway maintenance to intelligent and predictive.
Upon completion of the upgrade plan, Bishan Depot's complete overhaul capacity will double from two to four trains per month. At the same time, SMRT will also improve the skills of maintenance personnel across the board, promoting the adoption of more advanced maintenance methods to improve overall productivity.
All maintenance, condition monitoring, and operation data will be connected to the intelligent maintenance platform "JARVIS" developed by SMRT. The platform can be used to predict potential train failures in real time, optimize maintenance processes, and improve the reliability and safety of overall system operation.
SMRT said that the project will not only set a benchmark for modernization in local railway maintenance, but will also serve as an important reference for the design of new depots and the upgrading of existing depots in the future, helping Singapore's railway infrastructure continue to strengthen to cope with the growing transportation needs in the future.
The "Factory 4.0" project is jointly promoted by SMRT and CRRC Qingdao Sifang Locomotive and Rolling Stock Co., Ltd., and is supported and approved by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Singapore. CRRC Sifang has previously supplied trains for the Singapore North-South Line, East-West Line and Tangdong Line, and will also provide trains for the upcoming Cross Island Line in the future.
Bishan Depot will also open a new "SMRT Improvement Center" (Kaizen Centre) in November this year 。 The new center will showcase how SMRT has implemented the "Kaizen" concept since 2018 to continuously improve train reliability, operational efficiency and employee culture through dynamic exhibitions. The booth will also highlight how frontline-led innovation projects can help companies tackle complex challenges and drive better business outcomes.
SMRT said that with the continuous advancement of the "Depot 4.0" plan and the opening of the improvement center, the company will continue to improve the operation quality and passenger experience of the Singapore MRT system with stronger scientific and technological capabilities and more advanced management concepts. The active participation of CRRC Sifang and other partners also highlights the depth and prospects of China-Singapore cooperation in the field of intelligent rail transit.
