Rail Transit Exhibition News The Israeli Ministry of Transport and the National Transportation Infrastructure Authority (NTA) recently officially announced that the first phase of the Tel Aviv metro project pre-tender has been officially launched. This state-level infrastructure project with a total investment of about 65 billion Israeli shekels (about 20 billion US dollars, 142.3 billion yuan) is considered one of the largest and most complex transportation construction projects in Israeli history.

Project Overview

According to the plan, the first phase of the project will build about 78 km of double tunnels and 59 metro stations, which constitutes the core inner ring of the three planned subway lines. This phase is expected to bring the most significant transportation benefits and economic impact, providing a more efficient commuting network for the Tel Aviv metropolitan area.

NTA requires all bidding companies to have rigorous technical experience, sufficient financial strength and mature project execution capabilities before entering the formal tendering stage. The official also emphasized that schedule, safety and quality management will be the core requirements that are non-negotiable.

Construction scale and challenges

To complete the tunnelling works, the project is expected to use about 20 shield machines (TBMs) and consume more than 1.25 million concrete segments. More than 16,000 workers will be mobilized during construction (including numerous international experts).

However, the project also faces complex geopolitical and market risks. Due to the regional security situation and international business concerns, some global companies have shown caution about participating in Israeli projects.

Given the scale of the project, it is expected that at least 10 international companies will share the construction tasks in different divisions, and the project parties will need to coordinate intensively. Builders also need to address a number of major engineering challenges, including:

  • Approximately 40 million cubic meters of earthwork were processed;

  • Additional 18,000 construction workers will be employed;

  • Build independent power supply systems and power stations;

  • Develop 7 multimodal transport hubs to achieve seamless connection between the subway and heavy rail and bus systems.

Construction period and vision

The project completion date has not yet been finalized and is expected to be completed between 2037 and 2040.
Israeli Transport Minister Miri Regev said the start of construction was a "historic moment for the State of Israel" and called the project an "unprecedented challenge, It is also a huge opportunity to promote national renewal and investment."

NTA President Yodfat Afek Arazi said the Tel Aviv metro "will change the future of Israel" and that the success of the project will require "the joint efforts of ministries, local governments and the public."
CEO Itamar Ben Meir added: "The metro is not only a transportation project, but also an important engine for Israel's economic and social growth. ”

When completed, the Tel Aviv metro network will be 300 kilometers long, with 109 stations connecting 24 cities in central Israel. The system is expected to carry more than 600 million passengers per year, and when integrated with the light rail system, the annual traffic volume will exceed 800 million. Officials estimate that the project can save about 34 billion shekels (about $9 billion) in costs for the Israeli economy every year after it is put into operation , greatly improving the country's productivity and travel efficiency.

Project significance

The construction of the Tel Aviv Metro marks a new stage in the modernization of Israeli transport. This huge underground transportation network will effectively alleviate traffic pressure in central Israel, enhance the economic vitality of urban agglomerations, and demonstrate Israel's ambition and ability in complex engineering management and international cooperation.
