Rail Transit Exhibition News: On July 29, 2026, the Shanghai Development and Reform Commission updated its official website to announce plans to adjust all rail transit prices in the city and hold a hearing. This will be the first subway fare adjustment in Shanghai in 21 years.

The announcement shows that the Shanghai Development and Reform Commission plans to organize a hearing on September 7, 2026, to optimize the fare mechanism for Shanghai's rail transit. This fare mechanism applies to all city rail transit, but does not include the Maglev Line, Jinshan Railway, Metropolitan Airport Line, and future metropolitan lines.

The last time Shanghai adjusted rail transit prices was in 2005. At that time, the Shanghai Metro was entering a construction peak, with passenger flow growing rapidly. Some lines experienced comprehensive overloading during peak periods, and the metro used price leverage to regulate peak passenger flow.

By the end of 2005, Shanghai Metro had only five lines, from Metro Lines 1 to 5, with an operating mileage just over 100 kilometers. At that time, the purpose of the price adjustment was quite clear: to alleviate the overload pressure during peak periods through "peak shaving and valley leveling."

The proposed optimization of the fare mechanism means that Shanghai's rail transit fare system may soon undergo a new round of adjustments. Subsequent specific plans will still depend on the price hearings and official announcements from the relevant authorities.
