According to the first administration report of the Mexico City government, the modernization of Mexico City Metro Line 3 will start in December 2026, which will lead to the temporary closure of some stations on the line. The report, released by Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada, aims to improve the safety and efficiency of the metro system.

According to the report, the works will involve a complete renovation of electrical, hydraulic and signaling systems, as well as the modernization of fixed facilities and improved accessibility. The project also plans to purchase 45 new trains to replace old equipment. The public tender process is expected to take place between December 2025 and March 2026.

Metro line 3, which runs from Universidad to Indios Verdes, is the second busiest line in the entire metro network, after line 2, which runs from Taxqueña to Cuatro Caminos. According to statistics, from January to May 2025, the line will carry a total of 72.3 million passengers, while Line 2 will carry 88.5 million passengers.

During the project, phased station closures will be implemented to ensure the smooth progress of rehabilitation work, but the specific closure date has not yet been announced. The Government of Mexico City has completed a preliminary technical study to precisely define the scope of the project. This initiative aims to address the aging infrastructure of the metro and improve overall operational efficiency.

In addition, the report mentions that the comprehensive renovation project of Metro Line B has made 60% progress. The main goals of the project include putting 28 trains into operation during peak hours to reduce waiting times and speed up passenger flow.

Currently, the Line B project does not affect normal services, including the modernization of the communication system Tetra (investment of 70 million pesos), the renewal and maintenance of track equipment (investment of 70 million pesos) and the procurement of new sleepers (investment of 150 million pesos) to enhance safety and infrastructure longevity.

The announcement of the Line 3 renovation project has raised public concerns about the impact on transportation, and the Mexican city government has not yet announced details of alternative transportation options, but emphasized that the work will be carried out in stages to minimize disruption to citizens' travel. More information is expected to be disclosed gradually during the tender process.
