CRRC Changchun Rail Coach Co., Ltd. has announced the first of 24 four-car metro trains to be supplied for Belo Horizonte Metro Line 1 and Line 2.
Recently, the vehicle was presented at the manufacturer's premises to a delegation of the state government, including the governor of Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema.
Metrô BH, the concessionaire operating the Belo Horizonte metro operation, announced in June 2024 that it would purchase 24 four-train metro trains from CRRC for a contract value of approximately R$700 million.
The vehicle is equipped with automatic train operation equipment, passenger information displays and large windows. The first train is expected to arrive in Brazil for testing in September, ahead of the original 2026 plan.
The new vehicles will replace some of the 25 900 series trains on Line 1, which were built in the 80s of the 20th century and do not have air conditioning. The first 10 trainsets are expected to be operational on Line 1 by the end of 2026.
The new train will also run on the future Line 2. Line 2 is 10.5 kilometers long and stretches from Line 1's New Suisa Station to Barrerou, in the southwest of the city, with a total of 7 stations. Line 2 started construction in September last year and is expected to start passenger operations in 2028.
