Rail Transit Exhibition News Moroccan National Railway Company (ONCF) recently announced that a Chinese consortium composed of China Railway Materials Group Hong Kong and Macau Co., Ltd. and Anshan Iron and Steel Co., Ltd. successfully won the bid for the Kenitra to Marrakech high-speed rail project with a quotation of 51.6 million US dollars (tax included) (Tender No. F069/ PLGV).
The project is an important part of Morocco's rapid transit infrastructure development plan, which aims to enhance connectivity between major cities, improve transport efficiency and promote economic exchanges through the construction of a 430-kilometer-long, 320-kilometer-per-hour high-speed rail line. The contract involves the supply of 60 36-metre-long 60 E1 rails in accordance with European standards, reflecting the high specifications and stringent requirements of the Moroccan high-speed rail project.
The tender was opened to the public on March 20, 2025, and the bid evaluation was successfully concluded on April 8. THREE OTHER BIDDERS COMPETED, INCLUDING ITALY'S JSW STEEL ITALY PIOMBINO SPA, CHINA RAILWAY MATERIALS AND TECHNICAL SERVICES GROUP AND ANOTHER LOCAL MOROCCAN COMPANY. Among them, JSW STEEL quoted 51.66 million euros (about 55.6 million US dollars), China Railway Materials and Technical Services Group quoted 52.08 million US dollars, and another company quoted 11.67 million Moroccan dirhams (about 1.19 million US dollars). After a rigorous evaluation, the Chinese consortium finally won by virtue of its price competitiveness and technical qualifications.
The total budget for the project is approximately 527 million Moroccan dirhams (approximately US$53.7 million), of which the rail supply contract is an important part. The tender process was transparent and open, signed off by the Chairman of the Committee, Elias Hasnaoui.
The successful bid not only demonstrates the competitiveness of Chinese enterprises in the field of international railway infrastructure, but also further deepens the cooperation between China and Morocco under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative. After the completion of the project, it will greatly improve the transportation links between major cities in Morocco, provide important transportation guarantee for the 2030 World Cup, and contribute to the rapid economic and social development of Morocco.
