Recently, Chinese companies are studying the feasibility of building a monorail in Bishkek.

On March 19, 2025, the Ministry of Economy and Commerce of Kyrgyzstan organized a tripartite meeting in Bishkek, with the participation of CRRC Changchun Railway Coach Co., Ltd., the Bishkek Municipal Government and Kyrgyzstan Railways Competent Company, to discuss the construction of the monorail and its subsequent development prospects, according to the Ministry of Economy and Commerce of Kyrgyzstan.

The parties agreed to study in detail all aspects of the implementation of the project, including economic and technical feasibility.

The Bishkek Metropolitan Government will provide the Chinese side with a sketch of the design for the construction of the monorail for study. The city government also pointed out that the project can be implemented through a public-private partnership model, creating external opportunities to attract foreign investment.

Kyrgyzstan Railways Limited is interested in hybrid trains, believing that the technology will significantly reduce harmful air emissions and improve the environmental level of railway transport in Kyrgyzstan.

The implementation of the monorail will significantly improve the transportation infrastructure of the capital and provide citizens with convenient and modern means of travel. The new mode of transport will ease the pressure on the existing road network, shorten commute times and improve the efficiency of residents' travel.

Many parties confirmed that the construction of the monorail is on the agenda

Under the impetus of the Ministry of Economy and Commerce of Kyrgyzstan, CRRC Changba, the Bishkek government and the Kyrgyzstan Railways recently held in-depth talks in Bishkek.

The meeting focused on the feasibility study, economic cost assessment and future development prospects of the monorail construction.

The Bishkek Metropolitan Government plans to provide the Chinese side with a preliminary draft plan so that the latter can evaluate the technical options for the monorail.

At the same time, the municipal government has strengthened the PPP model for the implementation of the project to reduce the financial burden and attract more international investors.

Kyrgyzstan Railways has shown a strong interest in hybrid electric trains, hoping to use new technologies to reduce carbon emissions and improve the sustainability of rail transit.

At present, Bishkek is facing an increasingly serious traffic congestion problem, the carrying capacity of urban roads is approaching the limit, and the public transport system needs to be upgraded urgently.

If implemented, the monorail project will be the city's first modern rail transit system, which will not only ease traffic pressure, but also shorten residents' commuting times and improve overall travel efficiency.
