Recently, with the occurrence of the "subway pushing" incident, the public's attention to subway safety has heated up again. Against this backdrop, Seoul Metro has strengthened its safety protection and strengthened its citizen safety system. To this end, Seoul Metro not only emphasizes the importance of "platform safety gates", but also continues to promote its comprehensive "safe and secure safety system without dead ends" to provide round-the-clock travel security for 7 million Seoul citizens.
Hardware and software protection
In terms of hardware, Seoul Metro has installed surveillance cameras, emergency call devices, and special safe zones in all stations and carriages. In terms of software, more than 270 subway safety officers are deployed, and a smartphone application (TTOTA Metro) has been developed to provide passengers with a more convenient way to report safety accidents.
The construction of smart subway stations improves the efficiency of safety management
Seoul Metro is in full swing with the 'Smart Subway Station' project, which uses high-tech ICT (information and communication technology) to comprehensively manage station safety, facility management, and operation services through technologies such as digital twin technology, 3D maps, and IoT sensors.
Seoul Smart Subway Station
At present, Seoul Metro has realized the construction of 189 "smart subway stations", and plans to complete the full coverage of 276 stations on Lines 1-8 by 2026. Through this system, the real-time monitoring and information display inside the station will be more intuitive, ensuring that the staff can quickly grasp the situation of the station, especially in the event of an emergency, to respond at the first time, shorten the emergency response time, and ensure the safety of passengers.
According to the data, after the "smart subway station" of Seoul Metro Line 2 and Line 8 was put into use, the response time to emergencies was shortened by 72.7% (from 11 minutes to 3 minutes), and the station patrol time was also shortened by 64.3% (from 28 minutes to 10 minutes), effectively improving the efficiency of safety response.
The automatic safety pedal significantly reduces passenger stampede incidents
In order to further improve the safety of passengers getting on and off the train, the Seoul subway has also added an "automatic safety pedal". This system can be retracted while the train is moving, and automatically unfolded when the train is stopped, filling the gap between the carriage and the platform, preventing passengers from accidentally stepping on the air when getting on and off the train. Since the full installation of the automatic safety pedal, there has been a significant drop in passenger stampedes. In 2024, there will be a total of 70 passenger stampedes on Seoul Subway Lines 1-8, a decrease of about 30% from 2018. This is particularly remarkable, especially after the recovery, given the decline in passenger traffic due to the pandemic between 2020 and 2021.

Full coverage of surveillance and emergency facilities
In addition, a total of 20,584 surveillance cameras have been installed at 276 stations on the Seoul Subway line, which not only monitors the safety status of the stations in real time, but also effectively prevents various crimes. At the same time, 6,539 emergency calls and calling devices are installed in areas such as stations, transfer corridors and toilets, so that passengers can quickly get in touch with the security room in case of emergency. In addition, 595 "112 direct dial alarms" have also been put into use in the Seoul subway system, and passengers can directly communicate with the police in both directions and send location information in real time by pressing the alarm.
Through the implementation of this series of safety measures, Seoul Metro is committed to creating a safer and more efficient travel environment to ensure the safety and convenience of citizens.
