Outstanding member of the Communist Party of China, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, founder and leader of China's urban rail transit, former chief engineer of Beijing Urban Construction Design and Development Group, professor and doctoral supervisor of Beijing Jiaotong University, one of the founders, experts and director of the academic committee of China Urban Rail Transit Association, and founder of the magazine "Urban Rapid Rail Transit", Comrade Shi Zhongheng passed away at 4:40 on December 23, 2024 in Beijing at the age of 95.Academician Shi Zhongheng, born in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province in November 1930, joined the Communist Party of China in August 1954 and was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1999. In 1950, he was admitted to Tangshan Railway College, and in 1953, he went to North Korea to participate in the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, and graduated in November of the same year and stayed on to teach. In 1955, he was selected to go to the Soviet Union to study for a postgraduate degree in subway and obtained an associate doctorate, becoming the first person in the subway major in New China. In 1959, he returned to China to teach at Tangshan Railway Institute, and in 1965, he was transferred to the Scientific Research Institute of Beijing Underground Railway Engineering Bureau as the director, and in 1983, he was appointed as the chief engineer of the Beijing Urban Construction Design and Research Institute. In 2000, he was appointed as the director of the Urban Rail Transit Research Center of Beijing Jiaotong University. In 2019, he won the title of "50 Years of Tribute to China Metro".Academician Shi Zhongheng has been working hard for China's urban rail transit for more than 70 years. Created a theoretical system of shallow burial and protection of subway; presided over the research and development of China's first shield machine equipment; compiled China's first subway design specifications and monographs; National policy suggestions such as "planning approval before project approval" were put forward, laying the foundation for the sustainable development of metro projects. It has promoted the localization and autonomy of key equipment such as signals and vehicles; He has presided over the demonstration of nearly 100 major subway projects in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Nanjing and other places, and led the innovation of subway science and technology; It has cultivated a large number of high-level talents in the field of subway; It has made outstanding contributions to China's urban rail transit.Academician Shi Zhongheng has been involved in rail transit all his life and pursued his dream of rail transit. His death is a huge loss for China's urban rail transit industry! We mourn and deeply cherish the memory of Academician Shi Zhongheng! His spirit will always be with us.The farewell ceremony of Academician Shi Zhongheng is scheduled to be held at 11 a.m. on December 29, 2024 (Sunday) in the Orchid Hall of Babaoshan Funeral Home in Beijing.
