Recently, Elon Musk highlighted a major technological innovation of his tunneling company, The Boring Company. According to Musk, the company's newly developed tunnel boring machine (TBM), which is able to start excavating tunnels immediately without any site preparation, marks a significant increase in the efficiency of tunnel construction.

Earlier this month, The Boring Company released photos of the Prufrock-3 TBM for its final inspection, which showed the TBM being placed on a piece of equipment called "The Monster" and that it had begun to tilt. The "Monster" machine was able to quickly launch and recover the Prufrock-3 TBM, allowing The Boring Company to start tunneling very quickly.

In a recent social media post, Musk said the ability to start boring without any on-site preparation is a "real big deal." This innovation will not only speed up the construction of The Boring Company's transport tunnel, but may also provide new solutions for future missions to Mars. Some users on social platforms even speculate that this technology may play an important role in future Mars projects.

The Boring Company's goal is to dramatically reduce the construction cycle of a large infrastructure project from years to weeks with the Prufrock Series TBMs. Prufrock-3 is already advancing faster than 1 mile per week and six times faster than the previous generation TBM, the Godot+. In the future, the Boring Company hopes to increase this speed even further, reaching a goal of 7 miles per day, which is equivalent to one-tenth the speed of a human walk.
