The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and the Hong Kong MTR Corporation (MTR) jointly established the "HKUST-MTR Joint Laboratory", which has successfully simulated and predicted changes in Hong Kong people's travel patterns through the application of innovative technology, artificial intelligence and big data, providing strong support for MTR's train management team

One of the lab's core research projects is the development and application of a dynamic simulation digital twin that combines data from MTR's daily operations with data from multiple modes of transport, including buses, trams and ferries, to predict changes in passenger flow by simulating different operational scenarios. The technology can help analyze the distribution of people at major interchange stations to implement accurate passenger flow management during peak demand periods, including additional staffing, enhanced passenger information services, and encouraging passengers to choose alternative routes to effectively disperse passenger flows.

The preliminary results of the project show that the application of digital twin models in vehicle operation and management has significant positive effects, and provides a scientific basis for further improving operational efficiency. The Joint Lab is further exploring how this technology can be applied to predict and manage passenger flow changes after the opening of new rail lines or during major events.

Dr. Lee Ka Yun, Director of Innovation and Operations of MTR Corporation, said, "MTR has always been committed to applying technological innovation to improve the efficiency of train operation and management, so as to provide safer and more reliable services for passengers. We are proud of the outstanding performance of the Joint Lab team, and the valuable experience accumulated by the team in the project will further promote our ability to cope with different operational challenges." I look forward to continuing to work with HKUST and other partners to launch more innovative solutions to promote the development of smart railways and smart cities." ”

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology – MTR Joint Laboratory

The HKUST-MTR Joint Laboratory was established in June 2022 by the MTR Corporation, MTR Academy and HKUST Smart City Research Institute, with the aim of in-depth research and application of smart technologies to promote the innovative development of smart communities and smart mobility. Through close collaboration with MTR, the laboratory has developed a number of tailor-made projects based on the needs of the industry, covering various areas of people's mobility and life, helping Hong Kong to reach new heights in smart transportation and smart city construction.
