THE King Abdullah Financial District Development and Management Company (KAFD DMC) has signed a contract for the construction of a 3.6km driverless monorail line in Riyadh with CRRC (Hong Kong), CRRC Nanjing Puzhen and local firm Hassan Allam Construction Saudi (HACS).
The circular monorail line will be operated with six trains, calling at six stations strategically located to serve key areas of KAFD. This is a mixed-use development covering 1.6 million m2 and comprising 95 buildings that will provide office space, residential accommodation and commercial and retail areas, as well as hospitality and entertainment venues.
Providing interchange with the Riyadh Metro, the monorail is expected to carry up to 3500 passengers per hour at peak times. Local media report that it is due to enter service by 2026.
Construction will be undertaken by a consortium of CRRC and HACS, under the leadership of CRRC.
“With this project, we are enhancing the quality of life for KAFD's residents and visitors while contributing to the long-term sustainability of Riyadh,” says KAFC DMC chief operations officer, Mr Stephen Thomas.
“This project is set to deliver an advanced transportation network that not only enhances connectivity in KAFD but also sets a new benchmark for urban innovation and mobility in Saudi Arabia and beyond,” say CRRC (Hong Kong) investment director, Mr Wu Yuqing, and CRRC Nanjing Puzhen vice-president, Mr Xu Haida, in a joint statement.
