Rail Transit Exhibition News Hungary new energy hybrid locomotives, is a "catenary + battery" electric hybrid locomotive, these new energy locomotives designed for Hungary railway freight companies will be used in Székesfehérvár and Soroksár freight yards.
The new hybrid shunting locomotive of the Hungary Railway Freight Company (RCH), developed by CRRC Zhuji, has received type approval and is now approved for operation in Hungary.
The electric hybrid design allows these locomotives to operate both on tracks with overhead catenary networks and in areas where there is no such infrastructure such as siding. This flexibility is designed to reduce reliance on diesel locomotives in areas with limited or no external power sources. RCH, the only company in Hungary that offers a nationwide shunting service, has integrated these locomotives to improve the efficiency of wagon operations.
The locomotives were originally commissioned in 2019 and have been approved for regular service after extensive testing and operational testing of more than 40,000 km on the railway network in Hungary and abroad. During the testing phase, the locomotive showed reliability in operation, and the crew found it safe and ergonomic to operate.
The locomotives are powered by lithium titanate batteries that can be charged on the tracks of overhead lines, allowing them to continue shunting operation for up to 85 minutes without an external power source. The system allows the locomotive to haul trains weighing up to 800 tons at a speed of 20 km/h on non-electrified sections.
As part of an ongoing effort to expand hybrid locomotive capacity, Hungary Rail Freight is currently negotiating the commissioning of additional locomotives under an existing contract with CRRC. The manufacturer has also begun the approval process to equip these locomotives with the European Train Control System (ETCS), enabling them to operate in southeastern Europe, including countries such as Serbia, Bulgaria and North Macedonia.
