On July 8, local time, Russian Prime Minister Mishustin said that the concession agreement on the construction project of the Moscow-St. Petersburg high-speed railway line had been signed on July 5, and the construction of the Moscow-St. Petersburg high-speed railway line was announced.
This important project, known as VSM-1 (High-Speed Railway Line 1, HSR-1), aims to connect Russia's major urban centers and economic centers, serving about 40.2 million inhabitants, or 27% of the country's population.
The project includes 16 stops along the route, 4 of which are strategically located inside Moscow. Due to the dense urban and suburban landscapes of Moscow, construction work presents unique challenges. In response to these complexities, several tasks have been formulated:
Expansion of the railway line from Leningradsky railway station to Alabusevo
Construction of six bridges and five railway overpasses
Completion of the reconstruction of three highway overpasses
Modernize passenger facilities at nine stations to comply with MCD standards
Rebuild four future high-speed rail stations in Moscow, including Leningradsky, Rizhskaya, Petrovsko-Razumovskaya and Zelenograd-Kriyukovo for interchanges with 14 metro and MCD stations, as well as all surface public transport options.
Moscow's modernization efforts also include the creation of state-of-the-art passenger infrastructure at key stations. A high-speed train capable of reaching speeds of up to 400 km/h is being specially designed to ensure optimal comfort for passengers.
The project is expected to significantly reduce the travel time between Moscow and St. Petersburg, which will be reduced to 2 hours and 15 minutes. This shortening of time is expected to stimulate tourism, boost business activity, and create jobs. In addition, the emphasis on environmental sustainability is expected to reduce harmful emissions and traffic accidents.
Moscow's extensive experience in the implementation of large-scale railway projects, such as the Moscow Central Ring Line and the Moscow Central Diameter Line, strengthens its ability to realize its vision of high-speed railways. Integration with the city's existing D3 station will further enhance Moscow's transport network, making it easier for passengers to plan more efficient routes.
With the start of construction, Russia has taken an important step towards realizing its vision of a modern, interconnected transport network that has contributed to economic growth and prosperity across the country.
