Malaysian Transport Minister Loke Siew Hock announced that responsibility for the Penang LRT Mutiara Line project has been transferred from Penang State to the federal government.
The project will be developed and managed by a government-owned MRT company.
It will be implemented through public tenders for three main contracts. These works will include civil works for the section from Silicon Island to Penang International Airport and Penang Everbright Tower, civil works across the Penang Straits Link from Penang Everbright Tower to Penang Sentral Station at Butterworth, and construction-maintenance-handover turnkey contracts for railway systems and rolling stock.
Construction is expected to begin this year and open in 2030.
The estimated cost of the 29-kilometre-long, 20-station line will not be published until negotiations are completed.
