ARTS Rail Transit News The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Singapore has awarded the final civil works contract for the second phase of the cross-island line, as well as a separate contract for the power supply system of the underground metro line.

The S$199 million (US$152 million) civil engineering contract was contracted by Sinohydro to design and construct a 2.8-kilometre-long tunnel between Maju and Clementi. The Land Transport Authority said the contract completes its appointment of contractors for nine civil engineering contracts in the second phase.

The two twin-bore tunnels, each 1.4 kilometres long, cut primarily through hard sedimentary rock, will be constructed using a slurry tunnel boring machine (TBM). Real-time monitoring and safety measures will be implemented during tunnel construction.

Construction is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2024, with the opening of the second phase of the 15-kilometer project, which will feature six stations, is scheduled for 2032.

The joint venture between Siemens Mobility and Concord Group has secured another contract worth approximately S$400 million to design, supply, install, test and commission a power supply system.

In addition to the 66kV and 22kV AC systems, the traction power supply system will also be designed with a 1.5kV DC system to meet the operational requirements of high-capacity lines.

Siemens Mobility has also been awarded a contract for an overhead conductive rail system for a cross-island line.

The Cross Island Line is Singapore's eighth MRT line, extending east-west from Changi District east of Changi Airport via Brazil, Hougang and Ang Mo Kio to Kwong Khang, with nearly half of the stations interchangeable with other MRT lines.

The whole underground cross-island line will be constructed in three phases. The first phase was first announced in 2019 and is 29 km long with 12 stations. Currently, the first phase of the project is under construction and is expected to be completed in 2030. Engineering studies for the third phase of the project have begun.
