The contract for the Light Rapid Transit (LRT) East Line rolling stock and rail operating system has been awarded by the Public Works Bureau to a joint venture led by Japanese multinational Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, TDM reports.

Other parties to the contract, worth 3.6 billion patacas, are Top Builders and the Hou Chon Consortium.

With a completion date set for 2028, the 7.7-kilometre East Line is one of the most ambitious extensions of the LRT network.

When finished, the line will expand the LRT system to a total of 21 stations and 24 kilometres of track. It will enable passengers to journey between the Border Gate, the New Urban Zones, and Taipa by train.

To accommodate the East Line’s construction, Macao will take over a small area of land and sea southeast of the Border Gate that is currently administered by Zhuhai.

Other lines being added to the LRT network include the 1.6-kilometre Seac Pai Van Line and the 2.4-kilometre Hengqin Line, both of which will be finished this year.
